Regina was named the capital city of the Canadian province of Saskatchewan in 1906. Previously called Wasacana (“Buffalo Bones” in CREE), then renamed Regina (Latin for “Queen”) in 1882, in honour of Queen Victoria. Every Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer in Canada, has undergone training in Regina and along with the rest of the city they are among the most loyal sports fans of any city in North America, Regina is home of the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
